At Kłuszyn in 1610 a Polish army outnumbered five to one routed its enemy, and at Vienna in 1683 hussar banners rode in the largest cavalry charge in history. This 2009 commemorative 2 złote is devoted to the winged hussar of the 17th century.
The reverse by Andrzej Nowakowski shows a rider in armour with hussar wings and a leopard skin on his back, holding a lance with a pennant, with «HUSARZ - XVII w.» in an arc. The obverse carries the eagle of the state arms flanked by the date «20-09», with «ZŁ 2 ZŁ» below.
The first hussar formation was created by a decree of the Sejm in 1503; their lances reached 4.5 to 6.2 metres, and leopard, tiger or lion pelts were worn by the companions of a banner. The hussars fought their last battle at Kliszów in 1702, and the formation was finally disbanded in 1776.
The coin was issued on 21 January 2009 in 1,400,000 pieces together with silver 10 and gold 200 złotych; the same «History of the Polish Cavalry» series includes the 2007 heavy-armoured knight of the 15th century.
Uncirculated (UNC): the coin never circulated; the rider’s wings and armour are untouched by wear.
The VPcoins catalogue features coins from many countries, making it easy to build a collection by geography or by subject.
